Generator Inlet & Interlock

Generator Inlet & Interlock Installation

When the power goes out, a portable generator only helps if it's connected safely. We install a generator inlet and interlock kit so you can power essential circuits from a portable generator without running extension cords through windows or risking backfeed into the utility line.

What's Included

  • Generator inlet box installation (exterior power inlet)
  • Interlock kit installation on your existing panel
  • Circuit selection for what to power during an outage
  • Safe, code-compliant transfer — no backfeed risk to utility lines
  • Permits and inspection coordination

A Safer Way to Run a Portable Generator

Running extension cords through a window or door during an outage is a common habit, but it's not a safe or code-compliant way to power your home — it risks overloading cords and, if done incorrectly, can backfeed power into utility lines and endanger line workers. An inlet and interlock setup lets you plug a portable generator into a dedicated exterior inlet and safely switch selected circuits over at your panel, with the interlock physically preventing the main breaker and generator breaker from being on at the same time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as a whole-home standby generator?

No — this is for connecting a portable generator you already have (or plan to buy) safely to your panel. It's a different, less expensive setup than a permanently installed standby generator system.

How many circuits can I run?

That depends on your generator's output and which circuits you want powered during an outage — we'll help you figure out a sensible set (fridge, well pump, some lighting, etc.) based on your generator's capacity.

Do I need a permit?

Yes, generator interlock installations typically require a permit and inspection — we handle that as part of the job.
